Benefits You May Not Know About
Programs specifically for military spouses that often go unused.
MyCAA — $4,000 Education Grant
Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts pay up to $4,000 for certifications, licenses, or associate degrees in portable career fields. Available to spouses of E-1 through E-5, W-1 through W-2, and O-1 through O-2.
Military Spouse Hiring Preference
Executive Order 13473 gives military spouses noncompetitive appointment authority for federal jobs. You can be hired without competing — most spouses don't know this exists.
GI Bill Transfer to Spouse
Service members can transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to their spouse after 6 years of service. Deadline: must request before 16 years of service. Covers full tuition + housing allowance.
Family Separation Allowance
$250/month tax-free when your service member is deployed for 30+ days. Automatically added to pay — but verify it's on the LES. Use the Deployment Pay Estimator to see the full picture.
TRICARE Active Duty Family — $0 Premium
Active duty family members pay $0 enrollment fees for TRICARE Prime. Minimal copays for most services. The TRICARE Navigator tool breaks down exactly what's covered.
DEA Chapter 35 — Survivors & Dependents Education
Up to 36 months of education benefits for spouses and children of veterans who are permanently disabled or died in service. Separate from GI Bill — you can use both.
